The real fun comes from the grab feature. A quick dash left or right, flight when in the air, and hovering are all possible using them. The four C-buttons are used for brief boosts from Marina's propulsion systems. The A button jumps, and the B button grabs. holding down left or right moves that way, while down causes Marina to crouch. For starters the game completely does away with the joystick, relying instead on the d-pad for movement. The actual gameplay is where Mischief Makers shines. The easiest way to describe the citizens of Clancer is as large ping-pong balls with arms and legs, and a face like the mask on "scream" drawn on them. All of the inhabitants of the planet Clancer however, (including people, animals, and even the very bricks buildings are made of) have the same face imprinted on them. The art is a very anime style, with the main characters looking like they were ripped from the pages of an old Shonen-Jump. Along the way she makes friends with the inhabitants of the planet, fights an evil dopelganger, and even participates in the Planet Clancer Athletic Festival. The story centers around Marina, a cybernetic robot who must save her creator from a mysterious dark empire who has taken over the planet Clancer. The story is a bit dry but it is amusing, and you can look forward to some hilarious moments (such as playing dodge ball against a cat, and later riding said cat in a boss fight). The controls are a bit complex at first, but you get the hang of them after a bit. As far as 2d platformers go, it's very original. I remember renting old games from blockbuster years ago, and this was and still is one of my favorites on the N64. Like most people, this will probably be a hit or miss for you but if you get its appeal it will be a game that you'll be glad is in your collection. The music isn't memorable and the story really isn't either but some of the characters are still among my favorites in all of gaming even after all these years. The game can be beat in several sittings if you simply breeze through the story mode but every stage and boss fight has a hidden gold jewel that literally unlocks a fraction of the game's real ending when you find them. In the end, this is a good game to own especially if you enjoy seeking out one hit wonders. It's refreshing and it's a shame that this game was the end of Marina's adventures. Not since Samus Aran has there been a strong, female lead character in gaming that hasn't been highly sexualized or completely outdone by a male co-star. One of the most noteworthy things about this game that a lot of people don't talk about is Marina herself. Some of them are wonderfully over-the-top (like one where you ride a house cat while fighting a giant robotic jackal) and you will probably find yourself replaying some of them over and over again. As far as the gameplay goes, the highlight of the game is definitely the boss fights, especially the later ones. Marina's main ability is grabbing things and then throwing them and this can be done to just about anything and anyone, including allies, leading to some pretty hilarious situations. Once you do get a handle on things, the game is a lot of fun.

The controls definitely take some time to get used to and hand cramps are practically guaranteed if you want to try to get 100% completion.

One of the first things you'll notice about the game is that it is a 2D scroller, which were a rarity on the N64, and Marina is controlled using the D pad and C buttons. She then races off to save him only to find herself entangled in a war that's going on across the entire planet.

The game is about android named Marina Liteyears who is visiting the planet Clancer, inhabited by a race of aliens called, oddly enough, Clancers when her creator, the lecherous Professor Theo, gets kidnapped. Perhaps I have my nostalgia goggles on too tight but this is one of my favorite games for the N64. Like other cult classics on the N64 like Snowboard Kids 2, Jetforce Gemini, and Space Station Silicon Valley, you either love this game or hate it. There's really no getting away from the fact that, like most of the other games Treasure has developed like Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, and Sin and Punishment, this game is a cult classic.

A quirky cult classic and among Treasure's best games
